The Department of Pharmacology, Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugarh was established in the year 1948, exactly one year after its parent institution was born. The founder Head of the Department was Dr. Khem Singh Grewal (1894- 1965). He was an eminent pharmacologist of undivided India and was a pioneer in establishing pharmaceutical education in the University of Punjab in Lahore. After India’s independence, he was the key person in establishing the Pharmacology Department in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. He served as Head of the Department of Pharmacology till 1955.

Following the footsteps of Dr. K. S. Grewal, a number of dynamic personalities were entrusted the reigns of the Pharmacology Department. Among them were:

Presently the Department of Pharmacology, AMCH has a total of 16 dedicated and well versed Faculty and also an extremely trained and efficient team of laboratory technicians and staff. The intake of MBBS students per year is 200 along with 5 seats for post graduate course (MD Pharmacology) per year. The post graduate course in the subject was started in the year 1973 and till date approximately 50 post graduate students have passed out successfully from the Department.
