In the early fifties, only few qualified Anaesthetist were allowed to serve in India, none was there in the state of Assam. LMP ( Licensed Medical Practitioner) used to administer anaesthesia under the guidance of surgeons concerned.
In 1956, DR. H.K. DUTTA joined Assam Medical College and started to build the Nucleus of Department of Anaesthesiology. In 1958, he was appointed as Asst. Prof of Anaesthesiology.
On23rd May, 1961, the Department of Anaesthesiology was officially created via order No 61/7357-58, and DR. H.K. DUTTA was appointed as the 1st Head of Department of Anaesthesiology. In 1970, first batch of D.A passed from this college. On that year itself, D.A was recognised by then Indian Medical Council, and M.D course was granted to the Department. Since then the Department has produced many emminent and hardworking Anaesthesiologist, servicing mankind throughout the world.
