Introduction

Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU), AMCH

Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) is a project under the Department of Health Research, Government of India. Government of India, in May 2013, approved the scheme for ‘Establishment of Multi-disciplinary Research Units (MRUs) in the Government Medical Colleges/Research Institutions’ during the 12th Plan period. It is a path breaking initiative to develop/strengthen the health research infrastructure in the country to fulfill the newly allocated function of the Department related to “Promotion, Coordination and Development of Basic, Applied and Clinical Research”.

The objectives of MRU, AMCH:

  1. Recognizing the common goals of bridging the gap in the infrastructure which is inhibiting the pursuit of health research in the medical colleges.
  2. Recognizing also the need to bring about a substantial improvement in the health related parameters of the people in the state of Assam/North East states.
  3. Considering the common priorities of Assam Medical College in the state of Assam and ICMR to encourage biomedical research and to meet the continuous training needs of medical and non-medical personnel of the state of Assam to participate effectively in the processes of national development.
  4. Considering the need to enable the medical doctors/scientist/para-medical personnel working in the public health system or other health establishments of the state of Assam and scientist at large engaged in biomedical research to get orientation on modern advances in a regular fashion in their settings and facilitate the transfer of technology to the end users.
  5. Mutual acknowledgement of the experience, expertise and capabilities of AMC and ICMR and give due importance in collaboration, resource sharing and partnership.

The Multi-Disciplinary Research Laboratory (MDRL) at AMCH was first of its kind in the whole country which was inaugurated by Dr.Vishwa Mohan Katoch, the then Secretary to the Govt. of India & Director General ICMR, in presence of Dr.Atindra Kumar Adhikari, the then Principal  Assam Medical College, on 11th May 2013. Dr. A.K. Adhikari, Dr. R.K. Kotokey, and Dr. H.K. Goswami served as Principal investigators of MRU, AMCH during their tenure as Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, AMCH, Dibrugarh prior to the present PI Dr. Sanjeeb Kakati, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent, AMCH, Dibrugarh. Dr.Atindra Adhikari was the first principal investigator and Dr. Lahari Saikia, Professor, Department of Microbiology was the first coordinator of the MRU. This laboratory is providing a excellent research environment for Postgraduate students and faculty members of AMCH. In this regard, some of the key contributions of MRU, AMCH are:

The MRU facility in AMCH has provided the platform to perform quality research work for the past 7 years to the faculties as well as PG students of this Medical College. It has also helped in training local manpower inculcating the research acumen in them. MRU facility is being increasingly used for doing molecular works by the Faculties and Post Graduate students of various departments of AMCH for research and academic purposes.

The MRU facility is also providing patient services for uncommon tests like detection of viral pathogens  of ocular samples, and CSF.

Research details of Principal Investigator Dr.Sanjeeb Kakati

Dr. Sanjeeb Kakati, Principal Cum-Chief Superintendent, AMCH, Dibrugarh is presently the Principal Investigator of MRU and PI of several on-going ICMR funded research projects like “Registry of people with Diabetes in India with Young Age at Onset, Phase-II”, “Assam Medical College: Initiating Antimicrobial Stewardship activities in hospitals in India”, “Penetrance of susceptibility and protective genes in familial clustering of type 1 diabetes mellitus and its co-association with celiac disease”. His research specialization are in Rheumatology, Diabetology and Infectious Diseases. He has a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Under his headship in the Department of Medicine, the numbers of undergraduate and post graduate seats were increased. He set up a dedicated Immunology Laboratory with DBT grant Project entitled “Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)-- An Investigation into diagnostics and disease pathogenesis” at Basic Science building that has led to tremendous research work and numerous publications in the field of Rheumatology over the last few years. He was also a Founder Editor of the official publication of API Assam Chapter ‘Assam Journal of Internal Medicine’ in 2011. He is presently the Chairman of API Assam State Chapter. Under his guidance as a Principal Investigator various projects were completed, which are as following--- (1) A study on eco-epidemiological perspectives of emerging West Nile virus in Assam (ICMR funded), (2) longitudinal analysis of changes in cytokine profile of malarial patients at different stages of treatment and disease resolution (DBT funded), (3) Evaluation of autoantibodies among malaria infected Patients from north east (ICMR funded), (4) Evaluation of safety and immunogenicity of a single dose of live attenuated Japanese Encephalities Vaccine sa-14-14-2 in adults in assam (ICMR funded).

Research details of Co-Ordinator, Dr.ReemaNath

Dr. Reema Nath, Prof and Head, Department of Microbiology, AMCH is the Principal Investigator in three multicentric-projects related to Antimicrobial resistance and surveillance. She is the Laboratory Director of the NABL Accredited Microbiology Laboratory. Her research interests are in Endemic-mycosis and the Changing patterns of Anti-microbial resistance. She has pioneered Molecular Mycology works in AMCH including Pan–Fungal PCR from clinical specimen and cultures & Antifungal Susceptibility testing. She has published many research papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals.
